Laura
Branigan was a popular actress along with singing from Brewster, New York.
Laura was best known in the United States for the song 'Gloria' in 1992. She
studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City and worked as
a waitress while she attended school. Laura eventually got a job singing as a
back-up singer for Leonard Cohen, touring throughout Europe. She was signed by
Ahmet Ertegun to Atlantic Records in 1979 and her first album, ‘Branigan’ was
released in 1982, and was number 34 on the Billboard Charts. At first the label
was unsure on how to categorize Branigan, given the singer's strong dramatic
voice with a four octave range. Laura’s songs were part of the soundtrack for
the popular film ‘Ghostbusters’ 1983 and ‘Flashdance’ 1984, and also the
popular Playstation video game 'Grand Theft Auto: Vice City'. Her sudden death
on August 26th of 2004 was attributed to a brain aneurysm, which also caused
the deaths of her father and her paternal grandfather. Laura was cremated, and
her ashes were distributed over Long Island Sound. In 2005, a memorial for her
friends and family was held on the anniversary of her death near the Long
Island home in which she was caring for her mother at the time of her death.
The last album she produced was ‘The Essentials: Laura Branigan’ in 2002.
