Biography: Red Buttons was a stage name for a well known comedian by the name of Aaron Chwatt. Aaron was also an actor; He won an academy award for his portrayal of Airman Joe Kelly in the hit 1957 film Sayonara near the end of his career.  Aaron was born in New York City, to Jewish Immigrants and was destined to entertain. At age 16, Aaron went and got a job as a bellhop at Ryan’s Tavern in the Bronx. With his red hair and buttoned bellhop uniform he was a very entertaining guy. Orchestra leader, Charles Moore called him Red Buttons, which explains how exactly he got his stage name. Later that summer Aaron moved on to working at a couple summer resorts, and eventually got his first Broadway role in 1941’s The Admiral Had a Wife. Buttons went on to do more Broadway work, and appeared in multiple films.

In 1952, Buttons went on to do amazing things as he landed his own hit television series The Red Buttons Show where his catch phrase was “Strange things are happening.” The show ran for 3 years and achieved first-rate success. Married three times, Aaron has two kids. In his late years he moved on and worked as advertising spokesmen at a retirement community.

Aaron passed away in early July 2006. Sources say he died in his home in the Century City area, Los Angeles. Aaron reportedly died from Vascular Disease, a disease in which the heart is affected.
