Biography: Susan Butcher was born in Boston, Massachusetts and raised in the close by Cambridge. Susan loved the outdoors and was a genuine dog lover.  Susan studied at Colorado State University and went on to become a veterinarian. With her love of dogsled racing and breeding huskies Susan moved to Alaska to continue in these things. Very interested in the Iditarod sled race, a race that tests the musher and dog through 1,049 miles of freezing blizzards, Susan started to train. After placing in many of these races, Susan was forced to pull-out of the races when two of her dogs where killed by a moose and six others where injured. This however diddnt stop susan from success, she went on to win every race from 1986 to 1989.   

            Among Susan’s many accomplishments, the one that most comes to mind is the National Women's Sports Foundation Amateur Athlete of The Year Award that Susan won in the late 1980’s. She won many awards and one Female Athlete of the Year two years in a row.

            In early December of 2006 Susan was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia which is a disease of the white blood cells, three years earlier this was manifested as a blood disorder and she underwent Chemotherapy and received a bone marrow transplant in May of 2006. Butcher passed on in early august after battling Graft-versus-host disease and learning that the cancer she thought was gone had returned.
