When Walter was thirteen he performed his first solo as a child wonder, with many talents. After this Walter was seen often on CBC and had already begun to make a name for him.

Walter won a scholarship to French Conservatory of Music. When walter was fifteen he dropped out of Montreal High School to more actively pursue a music career. Over time, Walter joined a few jazz bands, and eventually ended up in India getting more spiruitually attatched. Walter founded a place for young men to play instruments and learn about music. Walter made his way back to the United states when his new band made its debut in 1971. Overtime, Maynard's band gathered 12 members, and succeeded at quite a few things.
