Biography: Born in Green River, Wyoming
Curt Gowdy was best known as the lead announcer for the baseball team, Boston Red Sox. Moving to Cheyenne at age 6, Curt was a star basketball
player for his high school team in the 1930’s. He went on to college to play
basketball at University
of Wyoming. Graduating in
1942, Curt had a degree in business statistics, and dreamed of being a fighter
pilot. A previous sport related injury caused Curt ruptured a disk in his
spine, enabling Curt for medical discharge from the Army Air Force in 1943.
November of that year, while recovering from his surgery Curt got a job calling
a high school football game atop a grocery crate in freezing weather! He
realized, He had a talent for broadcasting, and decided to follow his career in
this field. He later got a job at a small newspaper as a sports writer, and at
a small radio station. Soon enough, Curt started making a name for himself by
having a play-by-play style. Offers from all over the place came in and Curt
got jobs announcing for mostly college football, college basketball, and minor
league baseball. After making his name known, Curt got auditions for jobs like
announcing for the New York Yankees. In
1951, Curt became the official announcer for the Red Sox. He worked there for fifteen years, and left in 1965 for
NBC sports where was to call the Saturday Afternoon, Game of the Week. Winning
20 major awards, Curt became the first sportscaster to win George Foster Peabody Award. Sadly, Curt passed away on January 20, 2006. The
reported cause of death is cancer
