Biography: Born in a small
town called Heiburger, Alabama, and raised on a farm Coretta observed very true
small town morals. She, at a young age was exposed to the unfairness of a
segregated lifestyle. For instance Coretta was forced to walk five miles to a
one room class in another city of her state, while the white students got to
ride a bus to a bigger and closer school near by. Focusing the majority of her
time on her studies and work, Coretta did extremely well in her classes,
especially in music. Graduating from Lincoln high school in 1945, Coretta
received a scholarship to Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. She took she
took an active interest in the nascent civil rights movement as an undergrad.
She joined the Antioch chapter of the NAACP, and the college's Race Relations
and Civil Liberties Committees. She graduated with her bachelors in music from
Antioch and continued on with more schooling. She met her husband Martin Luther
King Jr., a young theology student while studying music in Boston. They where
married in June of 1953. Together they led the Civil Rights Movement which
eventually led to more rights for African Americans, in 1968 Martin Luther King
Jr was assassinated while standing on his balcony preparing to lead a protest.
Coretta died January 30, 2006 in a rehabilitation center where she was
undergoing treatment after having a stroke. She reportedly died from
respiratory failure.
