Donald Knotts, formally known as Don Knotts, was born in Morgantown, West Virginia.
The youngest of four sons, His father died when he was thirteen. His father,
William Jesse Knotts was schizophrenic and an alcoholic, and lost his farm to a
nervous breakdown before Don was born. Don graduated from Morgantown High School,
and joined the army at age nineteen. Don served in WWII and won the WWII
Victory Medal. After serving in the army, Don continued on to go to college at West Virginia University graduating in 1948 with a
degree in theatre. He went on and gained a role in the soap opera Search for Tomorrow from 1953, to 1955.
In 1956 Don landed a role in the Steve Allen’s variety show. He was greatest
known, for his role on the hit show, The
Andy Griffith Show as a blundering deputy sheriff. In 1965 Don left the
series and continued to build his facade in a series of comedic films. In the late 60’s early 70’s Don was known for
being the spokesmen for Dodge Trucks.
Don continued with a few more movies, Including the latest hit film Chicken Little as the voice of Turkey
Lurkey, and passed away in late February at the age of 81. Don’s reported cause
of death was pulmonary and respiratory complications related to lung cancer.
