Biography: Born as Dalia Messick, Dale changed her name due
to bias in the comic industry. She figured that since there was what we call
today gender discrimination and it was allowed, she needed to disguise that she
was a woman in hopes that she would get more work published. Known widely for
her creation of the comic series Brenda Starr, her most important achievement
was perhaps being the first female syndicated comic strip artist in the United
States. A print syndication is the form of syndication in which comic strips,
news articles and columns are made accessible to magazines and newspapers. In
the U.S., the act of comic strip syndication will help a comic strip or
cartoonist creator to get the cartoon or strip in as many newspapers as
possible in favor of the creator. In some instances, the work will be then
owned by the syndicate rather than the creator.
Famous
for the creation of the comic strip character Brenda Starr, Dale based her off
of people she had known in real life. Dale based Brenda's name off of a
debutante from the 1930's and the appearance of Brenda was based on Rita
Hayworth, an American actress's appearance.
Dalia
“Dale” Messick passed away in early April 2005, at the age of 98. After her
stroke in 1998, Dale could no longer draw and she passed away in California
near her family. The suspected cause of death was listed as natural causes.
