Biography: Born with the name Volodymyr Palahnyuk, Jack
Palance was Ukrainian, and the son of a coal miner and grew up in Pennsylvania.
Before becoming a boxer with the stage name Jack Brazzo in the late 1930's
Palance also worked as a coal miner. Winning an outstanding 15 matches with 12
knockouts until he lost to Joe Baksi who was to become a future heavyweight
contender. With World War II beginning, Palance ended his boxing career and
joined the military. While jumping out of a burning B-24 Liberator which is an
American bomber during a training mission, Palance's face which had previously
suffered many beatings in the boxing ring was disfigured. Doing the best they
could, plastic surgeons tried many re constructive surgery's to fix the dis
figuration. Palance was discharged in 1944 with scars and a somewhat dreary
face. Graduating from Stanford University in 1947, Palance left college with a
Bachelors degree in arts of drama.
Palance launched his acting career with the 1948
production A Streetcar Named Desire followed by his 1950 screen debut in
the movie Panic in the Streets. Palance
won an Emmy Award for Best Actor with his role in Rod Serling's Requiem for
a Heavyweight. Palance died in early November in his California home from natural causes.
