Date of Death: January 19, 2006
Biography: Born in a small town called Prattville, Alabama, Wilson was the youngest of eleven children. Raised baptist by his seemingly abusive mother, Wilson left Alabama in 1955, to go live with his father in Detroit, Michigan. Wilson told historian Gerri Hirshey "I get scared of her now. She used to hit me with anything, skillets, stove wood — (one time I ran away and) cried for a week. Stayed in the woods, me and my little dog." Once in Detroit, Pickett performed in a few gospel bands and did church tours across the country. After he launched his career with his self-produced album I'm Gonna Cry, he recorded three sessions at the production company Stax in May and October. Wilson was known most of all for his “Raw” soul. His target audience was people who enjoyed rough and fast paced soulful music. His most known songs include Mustang Sally and If you need me.About the Author
