Biography: Born with the name Maximillian Adolph Otto
Siegfried Schmeling, Max was a German boxer and had two fights with Joe Louis
that made history and became worldwide events due to the racial and national
affiliation. Max emerged as a pro boxer in 1932 and established an amazing
resume with 42 wins, 3 draws, and 4 losses. Winning German, European, and World
heavyweight champion all at some point in his life, his amazing stats and hard
work made him famous. At one point, reporters claimed that Max had association
with Nazism but this proved to be propaganda in 1938 when Max risked his own
life to save two Jewish children's lives. During 1936 Max traveled to New York,
United States of America to fight a new African American Boxer named Joe Louis,
who had been undefeated and by some considered unbeatable. Max said upon
arrival that he had noticed a flaw in Joe's style observing the way that he let
his guard down after throwing a punch. Shocking the boxing world, Max became
Joe's first loss. When Max returned to Germany he was known as a hero and
gained much fame. Joe, devastated in his loss moved on to become heavyweight
champion and stated he couldn't call himself a champion unless he beat Max in a
rematch. Joe won this time, and another World War was around the corner, many
people around the world viewed this fight as a symbol of the two places
fighting for superiority.
Max died on
