Biography: Born
in Joplin, Missouri Dennis had roles in approximately
100 productions. Since childhood, Dennis wanted to be an actor. Attending the University of Oklahoma, Dennis studied drama and was a
track runner, the star of the team. Dennis served during WWII in the U.S. Navy,
as a pilot. In 1945 he was married, and later had three children. He started
his career with a role on Broadway, and then decided he wanted to pursue acting
as a fulltime career. While transitioning into acting, to support his family
Dennis did odd jobs, like selling vacuums, tricycles, and woman’s hosiery. In
1952, Dennis signed a contract with Universal Studios and made his film
entrance in the movie The Redhead from
Wyoming. For the next few years, Dennis did odd acting jobs playing roles
in a series of films, still partake in his odd jobs to hold up his family. In
1970 he started appearing on the hit T.V. series Gunsmoke, winning him a number of Emmy Nominations. In 1974 he was nominated for Best Lead Actor. A
vegetarian since 1958, and student of yoga, Dennis founded the environment
safe, Institute
of Ecolonomics. Quoted
saying "There will come a
time...when civilized people will look back in horror on our generation and the
ones that preceded it: the idea that we should eat other living things running
around on four legs, that we should raise them just for the purpose of killing
them! The people of the future will say "meat-eaters!" in disgust and
regard us in the same way we regard cannibals and cannibalism" Dennis was
a very dedicated enviornmentalist. Tragically, Dennis died from complications
caused by cancer in 2006, at age 81.
